Former athletes secure seats in Czech municipal councils

Several ex-sports figures, including Jiří Šlégr and Alois Hadamczik, were elected to local councils across the Czech Republic.

The municipal elections saw a wave of former athletes entering local politics. Ice-hockey star Jiří Šlégr joined the Most council as an independent supported by the Naše Česko movement, and ski-coach Alois Hadamczik secured a seat in Kravaře representing a regional group. Olympic silver-medalist canoeist Vavřinec Hradilek was elected in Prague-Úhonice, while bronze-medalist skier František Jež won in Rožnov pod Radhoštěm. Shooter Jiří Lipták retained his position in Rajhradice, and ex-boxer Lukáš Konečný placed third in Ústí nad Labem’s Severní terasa district.

Former canoeist Stanislav Ježek succeeded in Dvůr Králové nad Labem, and mixed-martial-arts champion Tomáš Dvořák was chosen in Jinačovice. Acrobatic skier Nikol Kučerová earned a seat in Semily, and fencer Jakub Jurka entered Olomouc’s council for KDU-ČSL. Nagano champion Vladimír Růžička was the only notable loser, missing a seat in Chomutov.
