Former Aussie star Moises Henriques aims to lead Portugal to T20 World Cup glory

Moises Henriques, a former Australian international with experience in all three formats, has taken on the captaincy of Portugal’s men’s cricket side for a European sub-regional qualifier in Finland. The 39-year-old, born in Funchal, Madeira, only discovered Portugal’s cricket team five years ago and now sees guiding them to their inaugural T20 World Cup as his career’s ultimate goal. Portugal, currently ranked 37th, will face the Czech Republic, Germany, Greece and Israel in Group B, with the winner moving on to a final regional qualifier that includes Scotland, Jersey and Denmark.

Henriques highlighted the quality of his teammates, noting the presence of former first-class players Cameron Shekleton and ex-New Zealand U-19 captain Craig Cachopa. He also mentioned adapting to a synthetic pitch for the first time in decades after recent back surgery. Beyond the tournament, Henriques will compete for Glasgow Cosmic in the inaugural European T20 Premier League, hoping his dual role will boost cricket’s profile in Portugal and across Europe.
