Former Biology Teacher Restores 150-Acre Minnesota Wetland, Creating Wildlife ‘Bio Supermarkets’

Mike Niziolek, a former AP biology teacher, has spent three decades converting his 150-acre Minnesota farm back into functional wetlands that serve as rich habitats for wildlife.

Former AP biology teacher Mike Niziolek has devoted thirty years to reverting his 150-acre Elk River farm in Sherburne County, Minnesota, to its pre-settlement wetland state. By gradually replacing pasture with oak savanna, converting cultivated soil to prairie and reshaping ditches into wetlands, he has created habitats that host 15-20 plant species and abundant invertebrates, attracting sandhill cranes, monarch butterflies and endangered Blanding’s turtles.

The project, recognized with a 2018 Landowner of the Year award, received technical and financial support from the US Fish and Wildlife Service’s Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program and collaboration with the Nature Conservancy, which together have completed dozens of similar restorations. Niziolek calls the thriving ecosystems “bio supermarkets,” noting their role in flood mitigation, water-quality improvement, groundwater recharge and carbon sequestration.

He emphasizes that restoring lost wetlands is far harder than protecting existing ones, but views the effort as essential for climate resilience. The land is now protected permanently for future generations.
