Former BJP legislator killed in Rajasthan village clash over mining lease

Ex-BJP MLA Atar Singh Bhadana was fatally attacked by villagers in Bhonda, Rajasthan, during a dispute over his mining lease and crusher plant.

On Sunday evening in Bhonda village, Rajasthan, former BJP MLA Atar Singh Bhadana was attacked by a large crowd of villagers while inspecting his mining lease and nearby crusher plant. The mob, equipped with lathis, forced him to a local health centre, after which he was transferred to Jaipur where doctors pronounced him dead at midnight. His bodyguard, Gagan Sharma, also received treatment at a district hospital.

The dispute stems from a two-year agitation by residents of Bhonda and Raipur villages, who claim Bhadana used communal pasture land for mining traffic and tried to restart the crusher after obtaining court permission. Police from Weir station arrived after being alerted, and raids are now underway to locate those responsible.

Why it matters

The killing highlights escalating local conflicts over natural-resource exploitation and the risks faced by political figures in rural India.
