Former CDU leader Guido Heuer questions party's boycott of state premier vote
Guido Heuer, ex-CDU parliamentary leader in Saxony-Anhalt, said the party’s boycott of the minister-president election is only a recommendation and hinted he may stay in the chamber.
In Magdeburg, former CDU faction chief Guido Heuer said the party’s decision to boycott the first two rounds of the Saxony-Anhalt minister-president election is merely advisory, stressing that legislators retain independent voting rights. Heuer, the sole abstainer among the 15-member CDU group, said he cannot predict if other members will comply with the boycott. He clarified his opposition to the boycott stemmed from uncertainty about the legal consequences if a third round occurs and AfD’s Ulrich Siegmund participates, which could allow the candidate to win with a simple majority.
Heuer has asked the parliamentary secretary to seek a legal opinion from the Landtag’s legislative service. The internal split follows a recent leadership contest in which Sven Schulze narrowly defeated Heuer for the faction chairmanship, deepening tensions between the two camps.
Why it matters
The dispute reveals deep divisions within the CDU over how to block an AfD candidate in a key state election.
