Former Congressman Matt Gaetz faces new civil suit alleging sex-trafficking in Florida

A civil complaint filed in a Florida federal court accuses former Rep. Matt Gaetz of participating in the sex-trafficking of two young women between 2017 and early 2019.

A 38-page civil action lodged in the US district court for the middle district of Florida alleges that former Republican congressman Matt Gaetz took part in the sex-trafficking of two women identified only as Jane Doe 1 and Jane Doe 2 from 2017 through January 2019. The complaint states that Gaetz, together with two others, coordinated recruitment, payments, drugs and travel to obtain commercial sexual acts, exploiting the plaintiffs' economic vulnerability.

Joel Micah Greenberg, a close associate of Gaetz and former Seminole County tax collector, previously pleaded guilty to six federal crimes, including child sex-trafficking, and received an 11-year prison term. Gaetz rejected the new claims, asserting that much of the alleged conduct is false and that he will rely on depositions to challenge the accusations, which he says are based largely on a House ethics committee report that denied him a chance to confront his accusers.

He posted a 2018 social-media image of three women in swimsuits on a Bahamian beach, noting uncertainty about the plaintiffs' identities. The case follows Gaetz’s resignation from Congress in November 2024 after a bipartisan ethics investigation found evidence of multiple payments for sex and drugs.
