Former Dallas officer Amber Guyger granted parole and released after seven years

Amber Guyger, the former Dallas police officer convicted of killing Botham Jean, walked out of prison on parole after serving seven years.

After serving seven years of a ten-year sentence for the 2018 murder of Botham Jean, former Dallas police officer Amber Guyger was released on parole from the Gatesville prison. The Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles approved the early release, and her attorney Robert Rodgers emphasized her ongoing remorse and preparation for a productive life, including a job and a place to live. Parole conditions require frequent check-ins, travel restrictions, home visits and a ban on residing in Dallas County or contacting Jean's family or Dallas police.

Botham Jean's family asked for privacy while grieving, and attorney Lee Merritt expressed deep disappointment, calling the decision a further reduction of justice. The Dallas Police Department noted the decision was beyond its control and reiterated its thoughts for the Jean family.
