Former defence minister Panos Kammenos says he'll intervene to stop Samaras' new party and back Tsipras

Panos Kammenos announced he will re-enter politics to block Antonis Samaras from forming a new party and indicated he may support Alexis Tsipras in a coalition.

In a recent interview, Panos Kammenos declared his intention to return to active politics should Antonis Samaras move forward with a new party, accusing Samaras of seeking power for personal reasons and of manipulating the political system. He condemned one outlet splintering of parties on both the right and left, arguing it fosters governmental deadlock, and suggested he would spearhead initiatives to form a coalition government.

Kammenos also targeted Samaras over the controversy surrounding Maria Karystinou, claiming she was used as a pawn by Samaras' allies Niko Karahalios and Niko Nikolopoulos. He revealed ongoing communication with Alexis Tsipras, predicting Tsipras could secure second place in the next elections and might join a left-wing coalition. Additionally, Kammenos commented on the attack on former US ambassador Kimberley Guilfoyle, tying it to European energy projects and LNG pipeline disputes involving Greece, Albania and Italy.

Why it matters

Kammenos' possible comeback could alter the balance of Greece's fragmented opposition before upcoming elections.
