Former Democratic operative warns Hasan Piker’s rising sway could reshape progressive politics

Barker points to Piker’s three-million-plus Twitch followers and his involvement in campaigns for Michigan Senate hopeful Abdul El-Sayed and Wisconsin gubernatorial candidate Francesca Hong as evidence of his influence.

While El-Sayed won his primary, Hong lost to Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley, who declined to partner with Piker. Barker warns that Piker’s incendiary, far-left commentary may not resonate with voters in non-deep-blue regions like the Rust Belt, and advises candidates that courting his audience could jeopardize general-election prospects. She rejects comparisons to Joe Rogan, noting that Piker discusses politics almost exclusively.
