Former drug-war participants seek to share their accounts with Truth Commission

The Truth Commission reports that some individuals who took part in the Duterte drug war are now contacting the body to recount their actions.

In its latest meeting, the Truth Commission disclosed that former operatives involved in the Duterte-era drug war are reaching out to tell their stories. Commissioners Al Fuertes and Carlos Conde emphasized that the commission’s role is documentary, not prosecutorial, but that victim testimonies could pressure authorities to reopen cases. The body continues to listen to survivors, exemplified by Lorna Pepaño, whose son Christian was killed in a misidentification incident six years earlier.

Pepaño expressed a desire for justice and an end to similar killings. The commission aims to compile these accounts to build a fuller record of the campaign’s impact.

Why it matters

Victims' voices may push the government to address unresolved drug-war abuses.
