Former FBI analyst alleges Trump administration ordered illegal protest investigations

A former FBI supervisory analyst says the Trump White House directed the bureau to probe Los Angeles anti-ICE protests in violation of First Amendment rights.

Jill Fields, a former supervisory intelligence analyst at the FBI’s Los Angeles Field Office, submitted a formal whistleblower complaint to Senate Judiciary Committee leaders alleging that the Trump administration forced the FBI to investigate anti-ICE protests that were constitutionally protected. According to the complaint, acting deputy attorney general Emil Bove instructed the field office head to open a case on activities outside a federal building, and President Donald Trump later directed FBI Director Kash Patel to target protesters using megaphones during immigration enforcement actions.

Fields says the investigation was launched solely because “the President wants this investigation,” pulling agents from active cartel work for political optics. After refusing to participate, she was removed from three program leadership roles and resigned, believing the move was retaliatory. The complaint, filed with the help of the Government Accountability Project and attorney David Laufman, warns that such actions chill internal dissent and undermine the FBI’s integrity.

Why it matters

The allegation suggests political interference in law-enforcement, raising concerns about constitutional rights and agency independence.
