Former federal minister Chris Alexander exits Toronto mayoral contest

Chris Alexander announced he is dropping out of the race for Toronto mayor, reducing the field to 52 hopefuls.

Former Conservative MP and ex-immigration minister Chris Alexander has withdrawn from the Toronto mayoral race, acknowledging the move was difficult. He criticized the remaining candidates for lacking fiscal responsibility and ambition, warning the city could worsen in four years. Mainstreet Research poll data placed Alexander at a distant third with just 7.2% backing, while incumbent Olivia Chow leads with 38% and Councillor Brad Bradford follows at 32%.

Alexander registered his candidacy on July 29, describing the city as "slightly adrift" and pledging to restore direction. Prior to politics, he served in Canada’s foreign service and was the first resident ambassador to Afghanistan. His exit leaves 52 individuals still vying for the mayoralty, as listed on the city’s website.

Why it matters

Alexander's withdrawal reshapes Toronto's mayoral race and may affect the city's future policy direction.
