Former GLP-1 user sheds 100 pounds after bariatric surgery at NYU
After regaining weight following GLP-1 treatment, Pamela Melgarejo underwent a gastric sleeve at NYU Langone and has kept off more than 100 pounds for over a year.
Pamela Melgarejo spent years experimenting with various weight-loss methods, including GLP-1 medications that initially helped her lose 30 pounds but caused nausea, appetite suppression and suicidal thoughts, leading her to discontinue them. When her weight climbed to 267 pounds, doctors recommended bariatric surgery.
By September she hit 160 pounds and has kept that weight for more than a year, noting that she no longer feels intense cravings and that her previous health issues have resolved. Dr. Tchokouani said the case mirrors a growing trend of patients turning to surgery after GLP-1 relapse, citing the durability of surgical outcomes compared with medication. The NYU program provided comprehensive support throughout her journey.
