Former hockey captain Pargat Singh named new Punjab Congress chief
Congress appointed former India hockey captain and three-time Jalandhar Cantonment MLA Pargat Singh as president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee, replacing Amarinder Singh Raja Warring ahead of the upcoming state election.
Congress has installed former India hockey captain Pargat Singh, aged 61 and three-time MLA from Jalandhar Cantonment, as president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee, succeeding Amarinder Singh Raja Warring who resigned after discussions with Rahul Gandhi. Singh, who first won his constituency on a Shiromani Akali Dal ticket in 2012 before joining Congress in 2016, retained it in the 2017 and 2022 elections. His appointment, endorsed after consultations by party general secretary Sachin Pilot, is viewed as an effort to balance internal equations and maintain flexibility over the chief-ministerial candidacy ahead of the assembly elections expected early next year.
Senior figures such as Partap Singh Bajwa, former chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi and former deputy chief minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa are considered potential CM contenders, but Singh’s elevation does not place him directly in that contest. Singh’s background includes a stint as a cabinet minister in the Channi government and a distinguished hockey career, having captained India at two Olympics and receiving the Arjuna Award and Padma Shri. Party leaders praised his appointment as a step toward strengthening grassroots organization and presenting a unified opposition to the ruling Aam Aadmi Party.
Why it matters
The change could reshape Congress's unity and tactics before Punjab's pivotal assembly elections.
