Former Ilva workers seize Genoa airport demanding government response

Workers from the former Ilva plant marched to Genoa's Sestri Ponente airport, declared it occupied and blocked its entrances while demanding an immediate answer from the government.

Former Ilva workers staged a march from their factory to Genoa's Sestri Ponente airport, where Armando Palombo of the Rsu Fiom used a megaphone to proclaim the airport officially occupied and to block its entry points. The protest follows a Friday communiqué in which extraordinary commissioners announced an increase in cash-integration benefits amid coil supply shortages. Regional President Marco Bucci spoke with the union leaders, noting that Acciaierie d'Italia has an agreement to handle third-party coils should the Taranto plant shut, and that the Wednesday deal is already active.

Protesters, accompanied by their children holding banners, demanded the revocation or revision of the recent decree and warned they cannot wait years for a solution. Nicola Appice of Fim Cisl highlighted the risk that a halt in cash-integration could freeze entire production lines, urging immediate supply guarantees. Members of the Pd, Valentina Ghio and Alberto Pandolfo, were also present at the demonstration.

Why it matters

The occupation highlights escalating labor tensions and supply-chain risks in Italy's steel sector, pressuring the government for swift action.
