Former India players rebuke Yashasvi Jaiswal over heated clash with Asitha Fernando

Yashasvi Jaiswal’s justification for a confrontational exchange with Sri Lanka bowler Asitha Fernando failed to satisfy former India cricketers, who said his behavior crossed the line.

In the Colombo Test, Sri Lanka pacer Asitha Fernando bowled a delivery that broke Jashwal’s defence, leading to his dismissal for 45 after a brief spell of boundary hitting. Fernando’s apparent send-off prompted Jaiswal to turn back and confront him, resulting in a heated exchange that nearly turned physical. Jaiswal posted on social media suggesting unseen comments had been made, but former India cricketers Cheteshwar Pujara, WV Raman and Saba Karim publicly condemned the incident, stressing that physical contact is unacceptable and that players must set a positive example.

The ICC responded by fining each player 25 % of their match earnings and assigning a demerit point. The episode has become a focal point of discussion surrounding player conduct in the series.

Why it matters
