Former interior minister urges new Romanian cabinet to chase foreign investment after being brushed aside

Cătălin Predoiu says his proposal to attract major overseas investment was ignored by former premier Ilie Bolojan and calls on the incoming government to act.

Cătălin Predoiu, who previously served as Romania’s interior minister, posted on Facebook that his idea to “go around the world and bring in major investment” was met with indifference by former prime minister Ilie Bolojan, who cited other priorities. He referenced the United Arab Emirates’ recent investment plan for Greece and Giorgia Meloni’s trip to Kuwait aimed at drawing capital to Italy. After returning from a visit to Saudi Arabia, Predoiu had presented a similar strategy to the prime minister, but it was set aside.

He now urges the newly formed government to pursue the same approach, focusing on investors from the United States and Gulf countries. While European funding remains welcome, Predoiu stresses it cannot replace the need for large foreign capital, especially after the conclusion of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR).

Why it matters

The call highlights Romania’s push for foreign capital to sustain growth after EU recovery funds have ended.
