Former judges panel to audit Election Commission's voter roll revision
A five-member panel of former Supreme Court and high-court judges has been created by the Lawyers Association for Constitution to assess the constitutional and statutory validity of the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.
The Lawyers Association for Constitution (LAFC) has formed an independent commission comprising five former judges—Madan B Lokur, A K Patnaik, Badar Durrez Ahmad, Rekha Sharma and Anjana Prakash—to evaluate the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The panel will review the constitutional and statutory basis, methodology and overall impact of SIR on eligible voters, with strategic counsel from senior lawyers such as Kapil Sibal, Prashant Bhushan, Chander Uday Singh and others.
Its mandate includes verifying that eligible citizens are retained on the rolls and that ineligible entries are correctly excluded. The commission plans to conduct public hearings across the country, traveling with regional benches to gather testimony from affected voters, civil-society groups and experts. In parallel, the Election Commission has directed Booth Level Officers to launch a targeted drive to identify and re-enrol voters left out after SIR, comparing current rolls with pre-SIR lists and collecting Form 6 applications on the spot. The effort aims to complete verification within a month, with each officer covering 20-25 electors weekly.
Why it matters
Ensuring accurate voter lists is crucial for fair elections and public confidence in the democratic process.
