Former Kidnapping Victim Details SEAL Team Six Rescue and Post-Trauma Recovery

Jessica Buchanan, originally a teacher from the United States, moved to Africa to serve as an education advisor for a nongovernmental organization. While completing a routine field mission on October 25, 2011, she was abducted at gunpoint by Somali pirates and endured 93 days of harsh outdoor confinement while a ransom was negotiated. President Barack Obama approved a highly classified rescue mission carried out by SEAL Team Six, which successfully extracted her.

Buchanan discusses the psychological resilience she cultivated to survive the captivity and the subsequent challenges of managing PTSD and reintegrating into normal life.
