Former Labor Minister Manole vows pension indexation in 2027, threatens resignation over funding
Florin Manole said pensions will be indexed in 2027 but the exact increase depends on budget talks, and he would quit if the Finance Ministry does not allocate funds.
Former PSD Labor minister Florin Manole, who is expected to return to the portfolio in Luca Niculescu's prospective government, announced that pensions will be indexed in 2027, emphasizing that the move is a PSD pledge. He did not disclose a specific rate, stating that the increase will be determined by discussions with the designated prime minister, the incoming finance minister, and compliance with the budget deficit ceiling.
Manole highlighted the erosion of purchasing power and declining consumption as reasons for the indexation. He also noted that current energy vouchers will expire at the end of 2026 and that new support mechanisms may be required, while expressing doubt about additional food vouchers. Additionally, he said child allowances have been frozen for two years and should not continue to be indexed.
Manole made clear he would resign if the Finance Ministry fails to allocate the needed resources, stressing that the funds belong to the public budget, not any single minister. The PSD National Council met to set its stance on the future cabinet, proposing a strong presence with 11 ministerial candidates, including Manole.
Why it matters
Pension indexation affects millions of retirees and hinges on fiscal negotiations that could shape Romania's budget priorities.
