Former Lakers star Byron Scott faces civil trial as school settles with accuser

Campbell Hall, a Studio City private school, settled confidentially with Hayley Dylan, who says former Lakers guard Byron Scott sexually assaulted her on campus in 1987. The settlement amount remains sealed pending the civil trial set for Sept. 8 in Van Nuys, where Dylan seeks economic and non-economic damages. According to the complaint, the incident happened in a janitor’s closet while a Lakers basketball instructional video was being filmed, and Scott, then 26 and married, allegedly forced sexual acts on the 15-year-old.

Scott has acknowledged the contact but argues he believed Dylan, then known as Mendell, was an 18-year-old crew member. Judge Lee S. Arian rejected the school's bid for summary judgment, holding it responsible for protecting students from third-party harm. Dylan’s counsel argues the school’s settlement covers only emotional distress, while Scott’s attorney seeks a full offset of the amount paid. The lawsuit was filed just before the deadline of California’s Child Victims Act, which temporarily reopened time-barred claims.
