Former lawmaker and university officials sent to prosecution over alleged nepotism

Former opposition lawmaker Yoo Seong-min and three Incheon National University officials have been referred to prosecutors for possible indictment over the hiring of Yoo's daughter as a professor.

Police announced that former opposition lawmaker Yoo Seong-min, Incheon National University President Lee In-jae, and two INU professors have been sent to the prosecution for possible indictment. The charges include obstruction of business for all four and violations of the Improper Solicitation and Graft Act for the university president and the two professors. Authorities allege that the group obstructed the normal hiring procedure when Yoo's 32-year-old daughter, Yoo Dam, was appointed to a faculty post in the trade department during the second semester of the previous year.

While investigators found no proof of money or valuables being received, they claim the officials received improper solicitations related to the appointment. The investigation, which began in November of last year, also involved questioning Yoo Dam in writing, but she was not designated a suspect. The case highlights ongoing concerns about nepotism and corruption in South Korean higher education.
