Former Lithuanian kickboxing champion killed in Vilnius, ex-police officer named suspect

Former Lithuanian kickboxing champion Vincas Jašmontas was shot dead in Vilnius, with former police officer Roland Novickas identified as the suspect.

On Friday, former Lithuanian kickboxing champion Vincas Jašmontas was discovered shot several times close to a bus stop on Savanorių Avenue in Vilnius. Responding officers arrested Roland Novickas, who previously led the second division of the Vilnius County Police Organised Crime Investigation Board and left the force about fifteen years ago. Novickas remained at the location, did not attempt to escape, and police recovered a firearm he legally possessed.

He was later released from detention but subjected to precautionary measures such as confiscation of his travel documents and a written pledge not to leave the country. Initial reports indicated the incident stemmed from a conflict, and a pre-trial investigation into the killing has been opened.

Why it matters

The killing of a national sports figure by a former police officer raises concerns about public safety and law-enforcement accountability.
