Former Magna CEO, ex-finance minister and ex-tax chief face bribery and abuse of office trial

Siegfried Wolf, former Magna Europe president, former finance minister Schelling and former tax office head K. are on trial for alleged bribery and abuse of office, each facing up to ten years in prison.

According to the indictment, Siegfried Wolf, 68, former president of Magna Europa, allegedly proposed a corrupt deal to K., the former head of the Neunkirchen tax office, promising support for her application to lead the Baden tax office in return for approval of Wolf's tax review request. K. faces charges of abuse of office, bribery and violating secrecy rules. Former finance minister Schelling, 72, is accused of trying to persuade a ministry official to act on Wolf's tax case after his ministerial term ended.

The prosecution relies heavily on testimony from Thomas Schmid, a former state-holding executive who has been granted crown-witness status. Wolf, Schelling and K. deny the accusations, and the trial is scheduled for several days between October and December, with potential sentences ranging from one to ten years imprisonment.
