Former Mets power hitter Butch Huskey passes away at 54 from lung clot
Former New York Met Butch Huskey died at age 54 after a blood clot was discovered in his lung.
Butch Huskey, a former New York Mets outfielder who died at 54, succumbed to a blood clot in his lung, the organization announced. He was one of the final athletes allowed to wear No. 42 after Major League Baseball retired the number in honor of Jackie Robinson in 1997, continuing the tradition until his retirement. Drafted in the seventh round of the 1989 amateur draft, Huskey posted his best season in 1997 with 24 home runs and 81 RBIs for the Mets.
Over a seven-year career he also appeared for Seattle, Minnesota, the Boston Red Sox and the Colorado Rockies, wearing various numbers but most often 42. Mets interim manager Andy Green offered prayers to Huskey’s family and the broader Mets community. Huskey finished his career with a.267 average, 86 homers and 336 RBIs in 642 games.
