Former MP Jeffrey Donaldson faces sentencing after conviction on 18 child sex offences

During a pre-sentence hearing at Newry Crown Court, former MP Jeffrey Donaldson, 63, sat beside the two women he abused as children while Judge Paul Ramsey announced that sentencing will be delivered next month. Donaldson had been convicted in June of 18 sexual offences, including one count of rape, 13 indecent assaults and four instances of gross indecency, all committed between 1985 and 2008. His wife, Eleanor Donaldson, was found to have aided and abetted the crimes after a trial of the facts on mental-health grounds.

Defence barrister Kieran Vaughan KC conceded a lengthy custodial sentence is expected, noting Donaldson’s prior good character but stating the convictions erase his past achievements. Donaldson remains in Maghaberry prison and his legal team has lodged an appeal; Eleanor has also appealed her conviction.
