Former NAU fraternity pledge master sentenced for hazing death

Carter Eslick, a former pledge master at Northern Arizona University, received two months in jail and three years of supervised probation for his role in the hazing that killed pledge Colin Daniel Martinez.

In a Coconino County Superior Court hearing, former Delta Tau Delta pledge master Carter Eslick was sentenced to two months in jail and three years of supervised probation after pleading guilty to a felony hazing charge tied to the death of 18-year-old pledge Colin Daniel Martinez. Martinez died on Jan. 31 from alcohol poisoning, with an autopsy reporting a blood-alcohol content of 0.425%, far above the legal limit for drivers.

The fatal night involved Martinez and three other pledges drinking two bottles of vodka to force vomiting, while witnesses adjusted his sleeping position and checked his pulse. The court noted Eslick’s responsibility as pledge master and ordered him to deliver 305 anti-hazing presentations and comply with treatment conditions. Failure to meet probation terms could result in further incarceration. The university suspended the chapter after the death, and the national fraternity later closed the NAU chapter.
