Former Navy SEAL quits private equity to launch $9.25 billion autonomous maritime startup

Dino Mavrookas left a senior role at Vista Equity Partners to co-found defense-tech firm Saronic, now valued at $9.25 billion and building autonomous ships.

Dino Mavrooks, an ex-Navy SEAL who spent 11 years in special operations, transitioned to finance as a senior associate at Austin’s Vista Equity Partners. Dissatisfied after five years, he quit in 2022 to pursue a defense-technology concept, eventually launching Saronic, a startup focused on autonomous maritime vessels. The company quickly reached a $9.25 billion valuation and employs more than 1,000 people, with over 200 open positions.

Saronic’s expansion includes the announced “Port Alpha” shipyard in Brownsville, Texas, projected to generate 10,000 jobs and billions in investment. Mavrookas says his SEAL background taught him to make quick, information-driven decisions, a principle he applies to leading the firm. JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon has highlighted similar SEAL traits for business and pledged $24 million to support shipbuilding training, linking the broader push for a skilled maritime workforce.
