Former NYPD ‘Hip-Hop Cop’ Derrick Parker Dies at 65

Derrick J. Parker, the former head of the NYPD’s rap-intelligence unit, died at age 65, his brother said, after an unanticipated hospitalization in Nassau County. Parker had built a reputation in the 1990s for monitoring prominent hip-hop artists and their entourages, aiming to prevent violent clashes in the city’s nightlife. His career spanned more than two decades, including work on homicide, cold cases, and collaborations with federal agencies such as the US Marshals, ATF, DEA and FBI.

He played a role in the 1999 investigation of the Club New York shooting, which saw Sean “Diddy” Combs charged and later acquitted, and briefly detained Jennifer Lopez. After retiring in 2002, Parker provided security for large events, authored a memoir about investigations into Tupac Shakur, Notorious B.I.G. and Jam Master Jay, and frequently commented on high-profile legal matters, including recent trials involving hip-hop figures.
