Former Olympic Coach George Gibney Faces Sentencing for Decade-Long Abuse

George Gibney, the ex-Olympic swimming coach, will be sentenced tomorrow after a jury convicted him of indecent assault and attempted rape of four girls between 1971 and 1981.

George Gibney, once a celebrated Olympic swimming coach, is set to be sentenced tomorrow following a jury verdict that found him guilty of 39 indecent assault charges and one attempted rape charge involving four girls between 1971 and 1981. The assaults took place at several locations, including Glenalbyn Swimming Pool in Stillorgan and the Trojans Swim Club at Newpark Sports Centre in County Dublin, as well as in his personal vehicle, his home while he was babysitting his own children, and in the homes of two victims.

After fleeing to Altamonte Springs, Florida, to escape Irish authorities, Gibney was extradited last year to stand trial. His legal team has confirmed that he accepts the guilty findings and will not pursue an appeal. The case highlights the long-standing abuse allegations against a high-profile figure in Irish sport.

Why it matters

The sentencing marks accountability for historic sexual abuse by a prominent sports figure, underscoring justice for victims.
