Former Opendoor founder launches NavigateAI to give construction workers AI-powered coaching

Eric Wu, who built and ran Opendoor, has founded NavigateAI to address a severe shortage of construction labor, which industry groups say requires hundreds of thousands of additional workers this year. The startup provides AI copilots that workers can access hands-free on smartphones or Meta AI glasses, allowing them to query specifications, torque settings and code compliance in plain language. Launched in May, NavigateAI secured $25 million in seed funding at a $225 million post-money valuation, with backers including Elad Gil, Khosla Ventures, Fifth Wall, Lennar, Tishman Speyer, Helix Electric and angels such as Tony Xu, Apoorva Mehta and Brian Armstrong.

The firm is working with Meta to certify the glasses for safety-critical environments and partners with AIM, a Meta-backed trade school, to reach trainees early. Its pricing has shifted from token-plus-margin to a value-share model, capturing a portion of cost savings on projects, while the long-term goal is to amass a massive labeled video dataset for robotics applications. Wu acknowledges challenges around attribution of savings, veteran worker adoption and liability for potential defects, but plans to operate without a board to stay focused on customers.
