Former Panthers star Thomas Davis admits opioid addiction amid charity legacy and legal fallout

Thomas Davis, who spent 14 seasons with the Carolina Panthers and earned a reputation for charitable initiatives, publicly acknowledged an opioid addiction that he says damaged his marriage to Kelly Davis. He detailed the issue in a recent podcast appearance, noting that the prescriptions fueling his dependence also led to a criminal inquiry after his wife alleged that pain doctor Joan Rubinger supplied the drugs. The Drug Enforcement Administration launched an investigation in 2022 based on those accusations.

Davis's career highlights include a 2014 Walter Payton Man of the Year honor, multiple Pro Bowl selections, and playing in the 2016 Super Bowl despite injuries. After retiring, he has sought treatment and aims to repair relationships with his children while remaining connected to the Panthers organization.
