Former pilot warns of catastrophic risk if Sydney Airport safety gaps persist

A retired pilot and former safety inspector cautioned that unresolved safety problems at Sydney Airport could lead to catastrophic outcomes after three runway incidents were investigated.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau is probing three recent runway incidents at Sydney Airport, including a near miss involving a Qantas flight and a Virgin Australia departure. Retired commercial pilot and former ATSB investigator Geoff Klouth warned that the existing safety gaps could result in a catastrophic event if not swiftly addressed. Airservices Australia chief Rob Sharp reported that preliminary reviews have not uncovered systemic issues that endanger passengers, and the ATSB chief highlighted that several defensive mechanisms averted a worse outcome.

CASA described the latest incident as a matter of significant interest and is cooperating with Airservices. Sydney Airport reiterated that safety remains its top priority while investigations continue.
