Former PM Justin Trudeau Still Protected by RCMP During Personal Travels, Sources Say
Sources tell Quebecor Media that former prime minister Justin Trudeau continues to travel with an RCMP security detail, even on private trips.
According to sources cited by Quebecor Media, Justin Trudeau remains under regular RCMP protection for both official and personal travel, with teams of three or four officers on certain journeys. The police force refused to verify the claim, explaining that operational security prevents disclosure of staffing or cost details. The detail is believed to have been present during recent vacations in Switzerland and Italy, an award ceremony in Chicago, and his participation in events linked to the World Economic Forum in Davos.
The same security team likely accompanied him during high-profile outings with his partner, singer Katy Perry, including trips to Paris, Japan, California and the south of France. Former RCMP deputy commissioner Pierre-Yves Bourduas said the former prime minister’s “hectic love life” adds complexity to protective work, while security specialist Mamadou Diarra highlighted the extra risk posed by the celebrity’s own public profile. Funding for the protection comes from the RCMP’s taxpayer-funded budget, separate from any private security Perry might employ.
Why it matters
It shows how Canada funds and manages security for former leaders, even during private activities.
