Former PNL chief Crin Antonescu denounces Siegfried Mureșan's premiership bid as a national disgrace

Former National Liberal Party president Crin Antonescu launched a harsh critique of Siegfried Mureșan’s designation as Romania’s prime minister, describing it as the "ultimate shame" for the country and the PNL. Antonescu traced Mureșan’s political path from an early run with Elena Udrea’s party, through a brief stint with the PMP, to his placement on the PNL list by Ludovic Orban, calling him a "political creature" with a record of intrigue.

He highlighted past conflicts between the liberal camp and the Traian Băsescu-associated faction, suggesting the nomination revives old divisions. Antonescu further condemned Mureșan’s outspoken opposition to the Donald Trump administration, fearing it could undermine Romania’s strategic ties with the United States. He urged PNL parliamentarians to reject the cabinet despite the country’s need for a government, emphasizing that not every government is acceptable. The former leader framed the appointment as a low point for the party’s dignity and national responsibility.
