Former President Alvi warns that Imran Khan's health is rapidly deteriorating in jail

Former President Arif Alvi said Imran Khan’s medical reports show alarming anxiety, heart issues and high blood pressure, urging immediate hospital transfer.

Arif Alvi, a former president of Pakistan, raised alarm on X about the worsening condition of jailed ex-prime minister Imran Khan, citing specialist reviews that highlight extreme anxiety, heart palpitations and high blood pressure. He pointed out that Khan’s resting heart rate has climbed to 54 bpm, a figure doctors would label normal but which is atypical for him, and that his medication hints at sleeplessness. Alvi urged immediate placement of Khan in a hospital where a 24-hour Holter monitor and comprehensive cardiac testing—including stress test, echocardiogram, MRI and CT angiogram—can be performed.

He attributed the decline to three years of imprisonment, total isolation and restricted access to news and books. The former president called for an independent panel of doctors, stating that neither Khan’s family nor the public trusts government-appointed physicians alone. Alvi warned that the coming three months are critical to prevent permanent damage, emphasizing the nation’s need for Khan’s recovery amid ongoing PTI protests.

Why it matters

Khan’s health crisis could intensify political tensions in Pakistan and affect the stability of a major opposition movement.
