Former private-school teacher sentenced to seven years for historic sexual abuse
Deborah Franklin, a 65-year-old former teacher, was sentenced to seven years in prison for multiple counts of gross indecency with a boy under 14, offenses that occurred in the early 1990s.
A Hertfordshire private-school teacher, Deborah Franklin, 65, was handed a seven-year custodial sentence after a jury found her guilty of eight counts of gross indecency with a boy under 14, crimes committed between 1991 and 1995. The abuse, described by the victim as involving grooming, blindfolding and being tied to the teacher’s marital bed, was not reported at the time but emerged in 2024 when the former pupil learned Franklin was still teaching.
The court heard how the victim, now in his 40s, suffered lasting anxiety, OCD-like symptoms and suicidal thoughts. Judge Kamran Choudhry emphasized the profound breach of trust by a teacher-tutor. Although the maximum penalty had risen to ten years after 1997, Franklin was sentenced under the older two-year maximum per count, resulting in a seven-year term and a ten-year public-protection order barring her from child-related work.
