Former researcher alleges financial misconduct at The Florey institute

In a Federal Circuit Court hearing, former researcher James Tran alleged that The Florey medical institute engaged in serious misconduct, including the misappropriation of charitable and government funding away from its intended research projects. Tran, who is self-represented, said he reported these issues while employed and was subsequently threatened with termination and pressured to resign, noting that other staff had raised similar concerns.

The institute’s counsel, Nicholas Harrington, dismissed the claims as a baseless tirade, highlighting inconsistencies in Tran’s sworn statements and suggesting he curated facts to mislead the court. Harrington also opposed Tran’s request for an extension, pointing out that Tran missed a filing deadline after his legal team withdrew. The dispute follows a separate Supreme Court of Victoria case in which The Florey alleges Tran deleted documents after allegedly stealing thousands of pages of research. Judge Simone Bingham has reserved a decision on the extension request.
