Former Rwandan official Vincent Brown to face UK genocide trial in October 2027

Vincent Brown, a former Rwandan government official, has been scheduled to stand trial in London from Oct. 4 2027 on one count of conduct ancillary to genocide and six counts of conduct ancillary to murder.

A former Rwandan government official, Vincent Brown (formerly Vincent Bajinya), will be tried in London beginning Oct. 4 2027 on one charge of conduct ancillary to genocide and six charges of conduct ancillary to murder as crimes against humanity. Appearing by video from Belmarsh prison, Brown was told by Judge Bobbie Cheema-Grubb that the trial is expected to last eight to twelve weeks, with a separate plea hearing set for Jan. 15 2027.

Prosecutors allege he encouraged violence during the early days of the 1994 genocide that killed over 800,000 Tutsis, citing six victims killed in Kigali between April 6 and 13. Brown, a former medical doctor and head of a family-health department in Rwanda, denies involvement and has not entered a plea. A £100,000 bail condition remains unmet. The charges follow a seven-year Metropolitan Police War Crimes investigation prompted by a 2019 Rwandan government request, and British authorities note six other individuals are still under investigation for related crimes.

Why it matters

It is the first UK prosecution for the 1994 Rwanda genocide, testing the reach of international war-crimes law.
