Former Scottish leader Humza Yousaf to lead debate masterclasses at Edinburgh
Humza Yousaf, who stepped down as Scotland’s first minister, will deliver two masterclasses for the University of Edinburgh’s Common Ground leadership programme, aimed at teaching students how to debate polarising issues constructively.
The University of Edinburgh has announced that former first minister Humza Yousaf will conduct two masterclasses under its Common Ground leadership initiative. The programme, designed to teach students how to robustly debate their beliefs while appreciating opposing views, responds to concerns about a “deeply polarised, and often toxic” political climate. Yousaf, who left the Scottish Parliament in May after serving as first minister from March 2023 to May 2024, will share insights from his fifteen years in Scottish politics.
Equality, diversity and inclusion lead Fiona McClement highlighted the importance of fostering constructive dialogue on campus. Student-leader Syjil Ramjuthan added that diverse perspectives are essential for tackling societal challenges such as climate change and health inequality. The pilot involves contributions from academics, experts, staff and student representatives, with Yousaf being the first former leader to join.
Why it matters
