Former Shangqiu mayor sentenced to 14 years for large-scale bribery
A court in China sentenced former Shangqiu mayor Zhou Xianwang to 14 years in prison and fined him 5 million yuan for accepting bribes.
The Shangqiu Intermediate People’s Court handed former mayor Zhou Xianwang a 14-year prison term and a 5 million-yuan fine after finding him guilty of bribery. Investigators said Zhou leveraged his various posts from 2003 to 2025 to facilitate business deals and fast-track administrative approvals, receiving over 60.5 million yuan in cash and valuables. Although he faced public criticism for his role in the early COVID-19 response in Wuhan, the judgment focused solely on the corruption charges.
The court noted that Zhou’s confession, cooperation with authorities, and the recovery of most illicit funds justified a reduced sentence. This case reflects the ongoing anti-corruption campaign championed by Chinese leader Xi Jinping since 2012.
Why it matters
The sentencing underscores China’s continued crackdown on corruption among senior officials.
