Former Solomon Islands finance minister warns of looming cabinet resignations ahead of confidence vote
Former finance minister Gordon Darcy Lilo says more cabinet members are likely to quit as Prime Minister Matthew Wale prepares for a no-confidence motion on Monday.
Gordon Darcy Lilo, who was removed from his post as finance minister by Prime Minister Matthew Wale, warned that further cabinet departures are imminent as a no-confidence motion looms. The motion, led by Manasseh Maelanga, is expected to be introduced on Monday, 7 September. Maelanga, along with Justice Minister Clezy Rore and Commerce Minister Harry Kuma, resigned earlier this week, forcing Wale to appoint three backbench MPs—Rexson Ramofafia, Nestor Ghiro and Alfred Tuasuila—to the cabinet.
These changes have reduced the government’s 33-member majority to 29, and members of the People First Party may sway the upcoming vote. Lilo, who shares a party with Maelanga, said he feels compelled to support the motion despite denying any prior plotting. He also noted that the coalition formed after Jeremiah Manele’s government fell in April never formalised a written agreement, which may have contributed to one outlet turmoil.
