Former state asset manager and associate detained in Volán bus overpricing investigation

Investigators from the National Investigation Office have detained former Magyar Nemzeti Vagyonkezelő Zrt. chief Szivek Norbert and his associate Jellinek Dániel as part of a wider corruption case involving Volán bus companies. Eight former senior managers are suspected of orchestrating the purchase of used buses at prices far above market value, resulting in a notable loss to the state. The probe, launched after a complaint by the Volán firms, uncovered a network of intermediary companies used to channel the illicit proceeds into large-scale real-estate projects in Budapest's XII. and IX. districts, as well as in Balatonvilágos and Törökbálint.

Police conducted house searches, seizing contracts, paperwork and digital files that allegedly demonstrate money-laundering and the diversion of assets. The case highlights alleged misuse of public assets and the involvement of high-level officials in complex financial schemes.
