Former Super Bowl star granted early prison release to care for terminally ill daughter
Former NFL running back Wendell Smallwood Jr. was freed early from a federal fraud and weapons sentence so he can be with his 8-year-old daughter Mila, who is dying of cancer.
Gloucester County Superior Court Judge Renard Scott signed off on an early release for former Super Bowl champion Wendell Smallwood Jr., acknowledging the “unfortunate situation” of his daughter’s terminal illness. Smallwood, convicted in September 2025 on federal fraud charges tied to COVID-19 relief programs and a state conviction for possessing an AR-15 in New Jersey, was nearing eligibility for full parole when the motion was filed.
His eight-year-old daughter Mila, diagnosed earlier this year with diffuse anaplastic Wilms tumor, has been placed in palliative care after unsuccessful chemotherapy. Attorney Yaron Helmer emphasized that Smallwood poses no threat to the community and that his presence is vital for Mila’s remaining days. The decision follows a July appeals court ruling that struck down New Jersey’s assault-weapons ban, and prosecutors had previously opposed the release. Smallwood’s wife Autumn expressed gratitude and asked for continued prayers for Mila.
