Former SV politician and EU critic Dag Seierstad passes away at 90

Dag Seierstad, a former SV politician and longtime opponent of the EU, has died at the age of 90.

Dag Seierstad, who served as a politician for the Socialist Left Party and was known for his opposition to European Union membership, has died at 90 years old. The anti-EU group Nei til EU reported his passing and honored him as its inaugural honorary member. When the organization introduced honorary memberships in 2012, Seierstad was the sole dissenting voice, dismissing the practice as nonsense.

Despite his protest, the group later presented him as the emblem of the grassroots movement that has twice rejected EU accession. Former Nei til EU leader Heming Olaussen remarked that Seierstad's straightforwardness was a virtue of the Norwegian anti-EU side and that his singular efforts deserved special recognition.

Why it matters

Seierstad's death marks the loss of a prominent figure in Norway's long-standing anti-EU campaign.
