Former Tamil Nadu school minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi taken into custody over Rs 100 crore school scam

The Central Crime Branch arrested ex-school education minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi after a court denied his anticipatory bail in a alleged Rs 100 crore fraud involving private school approvals.

The Central Crime Branch of Chennai police detained former Tamil Nadu school education minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi following the Madras High Court’s dismissal of his anticipatory bail request. The arrest stems from a complaint by D C Elangovan, secretary of the Federation of Associations of Private Schools in Tamil Nadu, accusing B T Arasakumar and Muthukumar of extracting over Rs 100 crore from private school operators by promising permanent recognition, upgrades, and various statutory clearances.

The money was allegedly channeled as contributions to the DMK party, yet the promised permissions were never delivered. Earlier, Arasakumar was arrested on bribery charges, and subsequent investigations expanded to include Mahesh, resulting in raids at nine sites in Chennai and Trichy and seizure of documents. On October 1, the Enforcement Directorate registered a case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act related to the alleged racket.
