Former Tauranga councillor alleges fake ACC claim filed by ex-politician Andrew Caie
Murray Guy says a shoulder injury claim was fraudulently submitted on his behalf by former mayoral candidate Andrew Caie, prompting an ACC investigation.
Murray Guy, who served on the Tauranga City Council from 2001 to 2013, told reporters he never injured his shoulder and was surprised to learn an ACC claim had been made for him in July 2024. An ACC investigator informed him that the claim listed 13 physiotherapy sessions, which Guy says were submitted by Andrew Caie, a physiotherapist and former mayoral hopeful. Caie reportedly posted an apology on social media, acknowledging a mistake, but his lawyer, Hannah Stuart, said she could not discuss the ongoing investigation.
Police directed inquiries to ACC, which confirmed awareness of the allegations but offered no further comment. The Health Practitioners Disability Tribunal noted no charge had been laid, while the Physiotherapy Board’s conduct committee may still consider disciplinary action.
