Former Texas Democrat urges federal funding for transgender care in immigration detention
Former congressman Al Green called on the Department of Homeland Security to provide government-funded transgender medical treatment for migrants held in ICE facilities.
After his electoral defeat, Rep. Al Green organized a press event in Houston, joined by the Houston LGBTQ+ Political Caucus and the Montrose Center, to demand federally funded transgender health services for migrants in ICE custody. He accused the current administration of dismantling protections established under the previous government and said these actions created hazardous conditions for transgender detainees. Green addressed Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin, urging a restoration of medical care and safeguards.
He also drew a parallel between the discrimination faced by transgender migrants and the racial harassment he endured as a Black citizen. The congressman emphasized that denial of care based on gender identity violates basic human rights and called for humane treatment in detention facilities.
