Former Texas reserve officer sentenced to three life terms for child porn crimes

Daniel Joseph Bates, a former reserve officer with the Itasca Police Department, was convicted of possessing child pornography and attempting to solicit a minor. Texas Rangers acted after an adult decoy, presenting himself as a 15-year-old, alerted authorities to Bates' communications. A warrant authorized the seizure of Bates' digital equipment, which contained more than 300 images and videos of child sexual abuse.
Although Bates asserted the material was collected for a covert investigation into human traffickers, the prosecution disproved this claim. The jury found him guilty, and the judge imposed three consecutive life sentences plus a 40-year term for the solicitation charge, emphasizing that his badge could not shield criminal conduct.
