Former TV Anchor Sentenced to Life for Stabbing Mother, Claiming She Was the Devil

Former news anchor Angelynn Mock was sentenced to life in prison, with parole after 25 years, for stabbing her mother in Wichita on Halloween, saying the victim was “the devil.”

Angelynn “Angie” Mock, a former morning news anchor at KTVI in St. Louis and KOKH in Oklahoma City, received a life sentence with parole eligibility only after 25 years for the Halloween murder of her 80-year-old mother, Anita Avers, in Wichita, Kansas. Prosecutors said Mock stabbed her mother repeatedly, claiming the woman was “the devil” and that she had no alternative but to kill her. Diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder, Mock described delusional beliefs about robots, the Anti-Christ, and hearing God, and had previously been hospitalized for psychiatric treatment.

She initially reported finding her mother sharpening knives and that a struggle forced her to use a knife. At the time of the crime she was employed in sales for a data-management software company. After pleading guilty in August, a judge sentenced her to life imprisonment, with parole possible after 25 years.
